Grilled cheese and....

This is a recurrent debate that Brad and I have had a lot over the 7 years we've known each other.

Growing up, I always ate grilled cheese with soup (either chicken noodle or tomato). When I met Brad and made a grilled cheese sandwich for him the first time, he looked at me like I was crazy for offering soup with it. This is what our conversation was like:

"Soup?", he said. "You don't eat a grilled cheese with soup, you eat a grilled cheese with chips."

"Chips, with a grilled cheese?", I asked back. "No way, you have soup with a grilled cheese (unless you are at Sonic, and then you have tater tots)."

Tonight we ate cheap and had grilled cheese sandwiches. I had chicken noodle soup with it and Brad had BBQ chips. He made a gross face when I dipped the sandwich into the soup...mmmm! It got me thinking about what other people have with their grilled cheese sandwich. Is Brad the only weirdo out there?? Let me know!

Sorry Shannon! I'm gonna have to side with Brad on this one! Didn't they teach you in nursing school that you're only supposed to eat soup when you're sick?

If it makes you feel any better, I used to only eat mayonnaise sandwiches when I was a kid!

By the way, what is it with you Enright girls and grilled cheese sandwiches?

Sorry Shannon, but Brad is not the only wierdo. Technically, a grilled cheese is a type of sandwich therefore, it is appropriate to eat it with chips. I usually have chips, but I must say that soup with a grilled cheese does sound good. I would say chips: normal and soup: special. By the way, I had a grilled cheese with Nacho Cheese Doritos for lunch...MMMMMMMM!

Hi Shannon,

You're not weird, I grew up eating grilled cheese with tomato soup here and you can even order it in restaurants that way (see link below).

When you guys make it out to SF again, we can take Brad there!

It must be an Enright thing. I think Dad is the one that taught us the grilled cheese with tomato soup. He and Aunt Barbara must have been taught that. Amy, while we're talking :) , can you e-mail me your address? strz@flash.net
Thanks!

You're right, though, the best is grilled cheese combo is at Sonic with tater tots...yum!

I've always had grilled cheese with tomato soup but never with chips! I guess that makes Brad wrong about his choice of food and college football teams.

Thanks Wade and Kara! I feel better about the wierdo thing now...I mean seriously we have 2 Enright family members (enough said)and 1 Aggie that eat it with soup. HMM! I'm the wierdo, huh?

By the way, they were not just your everyday BBQ chips...They were Great Value Mesquite BBQ!

I'm sorry that Chris always has some tacky comment about football! :-) I also like my grilled cheese with soup, but I like the vegetable kind with alphabet noodles.

Now I'm going to have a craving for grilled cheese (and soup)!

Wade, sorry, but your mayo sandwiches and my grilled cheese combo are not even in the same category of gross-ness!

Kara, I was disappointed at first, but then you said the soup was special, so you are forgiven:)

Amy, that is awesome you can order tomato soup and grilled cheese at that restaurant! We will tie Brad down and make him eat it whenever we get to SF.

Kelly, you are right. Dad would always make the sandwiches and soup. Sonic sounds really good...

Chris, for my marriage's sake, I cannot comment about the football team. But I'm glad you agree with me on the soup thing!

Brad, yes, you are still the weirdo! Nothing but the best kind of chips for you dear! Love you.

Chips go with everything! Besides you can't eat soup unless it is less than 50 degrees outside. I think that is a man-law.

Wow! Who would have thought that you'd get so much conversation out of a grilled cheese sandwich.

Thank you for forgiving me. As long as you can eat a whole box of mac n cheese, love Coke, and eat Ding Dongs _ _ _ _, (straight out of the fridge) we can still be friends.Hahaha!

Sarah, I didn't see your comment earlier, sorry. I can't do alphabet chicken noodle...too many vegetables! And I love the smily picture of Noelle, she is a cutie!

Tim, I could eat soup any day, it doesn't have to be cold outside for me. I think it's man law that guys in general don't like soup.

Kara, you forgot the pound of queso also:)

OK, the Enrights stick together on this. Grilled Cheese and Cream of Tomato Soup is "to Die for". Even better when you make the sandwich with sour dough bread!!!!!

Chips are only when you can't find the soup!!!!!!

Guess who!

Mmm, right now a big loaf of sourdough bread from California ( not the grocery store) sounds really good. Thanks Aunt Barbara!

Wow...I'm really late with this one, but I've been busy. I do want to comment since I am responsible for Brad's tastes!

The Houston way, which was passed down to the Bankhead bunch, was grilled cheese sandwiches with chips. Occassionally in the winter we would have soup, but ONLY in the winter months!

So, consequently, this tradition was passed along though the chips were Cheetos. The BBQ was on his own.

Sorry to be so long to comment, but needed to set the record straight!

Hook 'em!

Shannon and Brad,
Sorry Brad, I have to side with Shannon on this one as this is what Mark and I had for dinner tonight. Not only was it tomato soup it was tomato BISQUE. Now, how's that for throwing a curve ball. Ha! And, as for the "man's law" on it having to be colder than 50 degrees, I'd have to knock that one too. It sure was a tasty dinner, wish you guys could have shared with us!! Miss you!
